For the Drinkers this season:
For those of you who like to partake in some alcoholic cheer over the holidays, below are the calories contained in some of the popular potables:
There are about 7 calories in each gram of pure alcohol. There are only about 4 calories in a gram of carbs or protein and 9 calories per gram of fat. Obviously, drinking alcohol is not a good option for those trying to lose weight, regardless of which diet you’re participating in.
But, if you insist on partaking, you can, if not help, at least not worsen the results of your intake. The best, or should I say, the least detrimental way to keep your damage down is to drink shots of liquor with a low-calorie chaser.
Beer can have from about 100 to 150 calories. Drinking a light beer will save you 50 or so. There’s also a difference between light and dark beers. Dark beers, even light dark beers, contain higher calories and carbs than light beers.
Wines, though reportedly better for your cardiovascular health, contains even more calories. The numbers depend on the type of wine you choose. When choosing White, Red, Rose or a Dessert wine, you will be consuming from 120 to 270 calories. White has the fewest and Dessert wines the most.
If you do choose to drink this holiday season, please designate a driver. Be Merry and Cheerful, but don’t take other peoples’ lives in your drunken hands. Call a friend, call a cab or call a spot on the floor. Stay away from the drivers seat of your car.

“Dark beers, even light dark beers, contain higher calories and carbs than light beers.”
Nonsense. Beer color is a result of the heat and duration of the kilning of malted barley. In other words, the only difference between light-colored beer and a darker beer is the amount of darker grain used in the mash.
Just like coffee beans; kiln one-half of a supply of coffee beans at a higher temperature and/or for a longer time and you’ll have a dark roast. Kiln the other half for a shorter time and you’ll have a lighter colored grain.
Same grains–different roasting temperature of the grains.
Congrats on your weight loss. I have lost 75 pounds.
However, I pay absolutely no attention to calories. My plan is related totally to fat content. I try to consume no more than 20 mg./day, eating in the “Zone.” If you do that, you will of necessity eat healthy food, generally also lower in calories.
But each person has to find the plan that works for him/her.
And, of course, you must work out vigorously or the weight will never come off. Water aerobics are my exercise of choice!
Thanks for participating in the Christmas Edition of the Carnival of Family Life! The Carnival will go live at midnight (Pacific time) on December 24, 2007, at Colloquium!
Happy holidays!
